Sample Letter for Removing Dismissed Bankruptcy from Credit Report?

Has anyone successfully had a dismissed bankruptcy removed from their credit report? I’ve been doing some research and it seems like, in some cases, dismissed filings (especially if they were dismissed early or never fully processed) can be disputed or even removed with the right documentation.

I’m in that situation now and trying to draft a solid dispute letter to send to the credit bureaus, but I’m not exactly sure how to word it or what details to include to improve the chances of removal. I know I need to be factual and polite, but it’d be super helpful to see a sample letter or get advice from anyone who’s done this successfully.

Did you dispute directly with the bureaus, or go through the court first to get supporting documents? Any tips on what helped get it removed or what didn’t work?

Would appreciate any guidance or examples you’re willing to share. Thanks in advance!

Yup i got mine removed! It was dismissed within a month due to missing docs. I disputed with all 3 bureaus and attached the dismissal notice and court docket. Equifax was the easiest, Experian was a pain........ Just be clear, factual, and persistent.

IDK i’ve heard dismissed bankruptcies are still considered filed so the bureaus keep them on your report regardless. Kinda seems like wishful thinking to think they’d remove it entirely. But hey worth a shot i guess.

If it was dismissed before being processed...... it technically isn’t a completed public record. I used that argument in my letter plus i highlighted the Fair Credit Reporting Act language. TU removed it within 30 days

Make sure you request a copy of the docket from PACER or your local court’s online system. Include that with your dispute. Keep your tone polite but assertive. Mine said: This filing was dismissed and should not be reported as an active bankruptcy

Following this because i’m in the same boat. Filed last year dismissed after 2 weeks. Didn’t realize it’d still tank my score even though nothing happened. Sucks. Would love to see a sample letter too!

Honestly......it’s ridiculous dismissed filings stick around. Like, I didn’t go bankrupt, yet my credit says I did?? I wrote a letter cited section 609 of the FCRA and boom Experian removed it. Others… not so much.

File online disputes AND send physical mail with return receipt. Some people even swear by faxing. Redundancy is your friend when dealing with the Big 3.

I didn’t have luck with the bureaus alone. Had to first get a letter from the bankruptcy clerk explicitly stating the case was dismissed and not adjudicated. After that i disputed and they finally removed it.

No experience but rooting for everyone trying to clean up their credit. It’s wild how something that didn’t go through can haunt you for years. Good luck to you all!

Do y’all really think these bureaus care about our letters? They probably toss them unless you threaten legal action. I say hit ‘em with a CFPB complaint if they don’t move.

I used Lexington Law back then. Not endorsing them per se but they DID get my dismissed Ch. 13 off Experian and Equifax. TransUnion still has it tho. Maybe i’ll try the DIY route now.

when sending your dispute, highlight the word DISMISSED on the court doc copy. Visually forces the reviewer to see your point. Sometimes it’s the little tricks that help!

If you want a powerful template, look up Section 609 credit dispute letter format and adapt it for bankruptcy. Worked for me on two inaccurate accounts. Never hurts to sound like you know the law.

Do not send handwritten letters......typed is best. Include your ID and utility bill as proof. Mention that the case was dismissed and never resulted in a discharge. State you’re requesting deletion as it's not a valid public record entry.

I actually emailed the court clerk. She sent a short statement confirming it was dismissed and never went through. Included that in my Equifax dispute. They removed it within two weeks.

Don’t forget to check LexisNexis and SageStream. Sometimes the data trickles from them. If you suppress it there first the bureaus might follow. It’s a bit of a credit game of whack a mole.

Wasn't dismissed but did get a judgment removed using a well-drafted dispute and court verification. If that’s any indication, documentation and tone really do matter. Be firm but respectful.

Hey i went through something similar last year. My Chapter 13 was dismissed early and i wrote to all three bureaus with a copy of the dismissal order and a short, polite letter explaining the situation. It got removed from Experian after two rounds of disputes! Keep it factual and include dates.......super important.

our best bet is to get the official dismissal paperwork from the court and highlight that the bankruptcy was never completed. Make sure your dispute letter includes this and explain why it’s misleading or outdated to report it. Keep it short and neutral in tone.
