How to Find Someone's Location by Phone Number

I’m trying to figure out what can be legally and realistically done with just a phone number. I’m not trying to stalk or harass anyone this is a legitimate situation involving someone I lost contact with. I’ve got their number but they don’t respond and I’m curious if there’s any way to at least narrow down a location like a city or state to verify if it’s still active or legit.

I’ve tried some of the free sites that do basic lookups but most of them either ask for payment or give vague results. I know a lot of those services and I definitely want to stay within the rules here.

With just the number the most you can legally get is a rough idea usually the area code and maybe city if it’s a landline.
