How does credit repair work, Need real answers!

My credit score is terrible, and I really need to fix it before applying for a car loan. I keep seeing ads for credit repair services, but I have no clue how they actually work.

Do they just dispute negative items or is there something else they do behind the scenes? Can they actually remove bad marks, or is that just a marketing gimmick?

If anyone has gone through the credit repair process
I’d love to hear about it. Did it actually help, or was it just a waste of money?
 
Credit repair services mainly dispute negative items but they can’t remove legit bad marks so be wary of anyone who guarantees that. also you can do a lot yourself by checking reports for errors, paying down balances and negotiating with creditors
