Navy Federal Contactless Card

UPDATE 06/04/2025 – Based on info from Navy Fed and recent Reddit threads: looks like only Visa and Mastercard credit cards are getting contactless right now no luck yet for debit or Amex cards.

Just wanted to drop a quick PSA for anyone who might care:

Navy Federal has finally updated their credit card designs and is now rolling out contactless cards across the board.

This is kind of surprising because not too long ago (back in 2019), they specifically said they weren’t planning to offer contactless anytime soon something about just having redesigned the cards that year. But clearly, something changed.

what they said back
“We do not have plans to offer contactless cards.”

Well… fast-forward to now, and here we are! You can check out the updated card designs on their site. If you’re like me and love the ease of tap-to-pay, it might be worth requesting a free replacement card if yours doesn’t have the contactless symbol yet

Glad to hear this finally happened! i remember asking about contactless on my GoRewards card like two years ago and they told me nah. i had to pull out my whole wallet while my friends were tapping like it’s the Jetsons. About time they caught up.

Lol not Navy Fed finally joining 2018.... swear i’ve been tapping with Apple Pay forever but it's nice to finally see the actual cards get updated. I travel a lot and contactless is a life saver in airports.

I requested a replacement card last week after seeing someone mention this and it came with the new design AND contactless. Clean look too. I’m impressed they usually move like molasses lol.

I thought they’d never do this. They were so resistant before i figured it was a lost cause. Maybe public pressure or member feedback finally got them to move?

Why are they skipping debit though? i feel like that’s what most people use day to day especially for small purchases where tap to pay would shine. Feels like half an upgrade.

Lowkey shocked Navy Fed beat USAA to this. I always thought USAA was more tech-forward but i guess not anymore. Props where props are due.

I’ve got the Platinum Visa and no tap on mine. Gonna request a new one. Wish they’d just automatically issue them instead of making us ask for it though.

Kinda wish they did a press release or something. I only found out because of Reddit. Like how are we supposed to know unless we dig through threads?

I’m guessing they’re rolling it out slowly so they don’t get slammed with replacement card requests. If everyone asked at once customer service would crash lol.

I asked for a replacement over chat and got it in 5 days. The rep didn’t even ask why. I just said i want the contactless version and she said okay, boom. Super easy.

Glad someone’s finally talking about this. I’ve been embarrassed pulling out my non-tap card at places like Starbucks while the barista’s tapping hers with one hand and making espresso with the other

Honestly Navy Fed cards are great for rates and limits, but man they move slow when it comes to tech. I remember when mobile check deposit took forever to improve too.

Just checked my Navy Fed app and yeah the new designs are up. I actually really like how clean the cashRewards card looks now. Might actually switch back to using it!

This is solid news, but it’s 2025 and we’re still celebrating tap-to-pay like it’s some futuristic miracle. Makes me wonder what else credit unions are slacking on.

I remember Navy Fed saying they weren’t gonna bother with contactless due to security concerns. That always felt like an excuse. Glad they finally re evaluated.

Can anyone confirm if Apple Pay or Google Pay with the old cards still work fine? i usually just use my phone, but it’d be cool to tap with the card too.

Honestly the contactless thing is cool, but what I really want is metal cards. Like if I’m gonna flex i want it to make a clang when it hits the counter

I’m in Germany right now and literally everyone uses contactless. Even vending machines. I’m glad Navy Fed is catching up, but this was long overdue for an international friendly institution.
