How Much Does TurboTax Cost? Thinking About Filing Online

Tax season is here, and I’m trying to figure out how much TurboTax actually costs. I know they advertise “free” filing, but from what I’ve heard, a lot of people end up paying fees depending on their tax situation.
If anyone has used it recently, I’d love to hear what you paid

Yeah TurboTax’s free option only works for very simple returns. If you have deductions, investments or self employment income they’ll probably charge you. I used it last year and ended up paying around $100 for federal and state.

Yeah the free part only works for super simple returns. If you have deductions, investments or self employment income TurboTax will hit you with fees. I ended up paying around $89 for Deluxe + state filing last year

Tax software prices change throughout the season filing early is usually cheaper. If you wait until April, expect a price hike. Check with your bank or credit card provider for discounts or free filing codes!

TurboTax's free option only covers simple returns anything extra like deductions, investments, or self-employment that comes with fees. Costs can range from $39 to $219+ depending on what you need.
Whats your tax situation?

It’s frustrating how TurboTax tries to upsell you on faster refund delivery. Like, come on it’s my money to begin with! I’ve already paid my taxes, and now they want to charge me extra just to get my own refund a little quicker?

it feels like they’re taking advantage of the fact that people are eager to get their money back.

it’s my hard earned cash, and I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops or pay additional fees just to access it sooner. It’s already mine why does it feel like they’re holding it hostage unless I pay up?

TurboTax is free for simple returns but if you have investments, self-employment, or itemized deductions, u will likely pay $39–$119 for federal and up to $59 per state.

TurboTax’s “free” filing only works for basic returns..once you add deductions or extra forms, fees kick in. Most people end up paying anywhere from $50 to $200+. What kind of return are you filing?

Oh yeah TurboTax's "free" option can feel like a bait-and-switch!
I ended up paying around $80 last year once they tacked on deductions and state filing fees. If your taxes are super simple u r probably safe but anything extra bumps up the cost fast. Good luck

Yeah, free is really only for simple W-2s, no dependents, no student loans, no crypto, no nothing. Basically if u r 22 and live at home.

Still cheaper than hiring a CPA, tbh. i paid $89 and it was way less stressful than waiting two weeks for an accountant to respond.

I used TurboTax Free Edition and still got hit with a $59 fee because i had to file a 1099. Their free is only free if u r literally W-2 and nothing else 🤷‍♂️

Used TurboTax every year since 2013. It used to be free for simple returns but now they’re sneaky. I had to pay $89 just to claim child tax credit… like, what?? Isn’t that standard now?
