Trying to find a veteran by name and not sure where to begin

I’m hoping someone here might point me in the right direction. I’m trying to locate a veteran I lost touch with years ago. All I have is his full name, the branch he served in Army and a rough idea of where he might’ve lived when we last talked. I don’t have a phone number or social media and I’m not sure if he even uses those.

I’ve already tried basic google searches and a few free people search sites but I haven’t had any real luck. I looked into some of the paid options but reviews seem mixed and I’d rather not throw money at something unless I know it actually works especially since I don’t have much info to go on.

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to approach this? Maybe a veterans database or another avenue I haven’t thought of?

Start with the National Archives Veterans Service Records site. If the person is deceased or you’re next of kin, you can request info legally.

Try looking them up through the department of veterans affairs if you have a valid reason. They won't give you their info but may forward a message.

You could also try ancestry.com military records section. They index enlistment rosters, draft cards and pension rolls.

If you have a common name try combining it with service branch and approximate enlistment year in google. It can dig up obits, awards or reunions.

If you're just trying to reach them and not dig into their service, a people search tool like whitepages or fastpeoplesearch might work.
